Doctor Horrible, as the title suggests, is the musical blog of a wannabe villain (played by Neil Patrick Harris - *drool* - Starship Troopers) who is so adorable, you can't imagine him becoming the next Doctor Doom despite his Ph.D in 'Horribleness'. He means well ... in an evil mad scientist sense but is distracted by his love of Penny (Felicia Day, The Guild) whilst trying to battle arch-nemesis Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion - *drool* - Serenity, Buffy the Vampire Slayer).
The three acts - which can be seen until midnight tonight American time - follow Horrible (aka Billy's) attempts to get into the Evil League of Evil - by following his vide0 blog - and gain enough courage to talk to Penny. Unfortunately their first conversation leads to Penny being shoved into a pile of rubbish by Captain Hammer during Horrible's heist to steal a vital component for his freeze ray. The pair get caught in the moment and end up dating, much to Horrible's ire.
Created and produced by Joss Whedon, think The Guild but with music, superheroes and a really heartbreaking ending, Doctor Horrible came about during the writer's strike to prove that fun series could be created cheaply and independently. I think it's a stunning success with amazingly catchy songs (yep, a soundtrack is on the way) and Americans can even buy it on iTunes (oi, Apple UK, hurry up!). If you liked 'Once More With Feeling', then Doctor Horrible's Sing-Alone Blog is its spiritual successor!
